St. Lucia’s Eleven Quarters

St. Lucia has eleven quarters which were introduced under the French colonial government and continued by the British. The most popular quarters are Castries, Anse la Raye, Soufriere and Gros Islet.

The capital city of St. Lucia is Castries, located on the north-west side of the island. Other major towns include Gros Islet, Soufrière and Vieux Fort.

Both Vieux Fort and Castries feature an international airport – St Lucia Hewanorra International Airport near Vieux Fort and George Charles Inter-Island Airport in Castries. Hewanorra International Airport serves about 400,000 passengers per year and the airport receives flights from major carriers including British Airways, Air Canada, Air Jamaica and Virgin Atlantic Airways. The smaller George Charles Inter-Island airport serves Caribbean destinations.

St. Lucia’s rich cultural heritage and warm, charming people are a fascinating blend of the rich history and different customs.  Dotted with fortresses, plantations, villages and open-air markets, St. Lucia offers activities for every interest.
